Marie Carroll has achieved an extraordinary spontaneity in her splendid and exciting painting. She uses variations of
style and motifs and explores the techniques of alla prima. Marie works on the canvas drawing and re-drawing. Her direct,
all prima paintings, laden with pigment straight from the tube, excite and capture everyday life.
She exaggerates form
and movement with rich and intense colors. Her paintings depict crowded streets, cafes full of life, interiors (the Shelbourne
Bar), landscapes and seascapes (Killiney Beach and Sandymount Strand).
Marie Carroll began painting with works of a
impressionist character. Her interest in primitive, nave painting led her toward a simplification of form which was to take
to a new level of expression.
"At the moment I am absorbed in landscapes and interiors. My brush strokes are heavily
laden. I hit the canvas with irregular touches of the brush which I leave as they are, patches of thickly laid-on color, creating
a sense of movement, a flickering light, the reshness off an immediate impression."
Marie Carroll is steeped in the
history of art. She is influenced by the masters of European painting, but her work is distinctively Irish.
She draws
her inspiration from the people of Ireland, its customs and landscapes. She has emerged as one of the most important of Irish
painters and has a rapidly growing international reputation. Her work is to be found in some of the most important collections
at home and abroad.
